More Than Just Healthcare

No Cost Resources for You and Your Family

Most North Carolina Medicaid members have benefit options available to help their families thrive. Beyond traditional doctor visits, health plans offer extra health and wellness support and resources, often called “Value-Added Benefits” or “Value-Added Services,” at no cost to you.

Quick Start: How to Get Your Extra Benefits

To access these extra benefits, members must:

  1. Be a Medicaid member enrolled in AmeriHealth Caritas, Carolina Complete Health, Healthy Blue, or United Healthcare.
  2. Have your Member ID card ready.
  3. Call your plan’s Member Services or visit their website using the numbers and links below. Your Member Services number should also be on the back of your insurance ID card.

What Extra Benefits are Available?

Across AmeriHealth Caritas, Carolina Complete Health, Healthy Blue, and United Healthcare plans, the Value-Added Benefits programs may offer members the following support.

Infant and Maternal Benefits

  • Essentials: Diapers, wipes, and formula.
  • Gear: Car seats, portable cribs, and strollers.
  • Doula support: Access to birth coaches that offer support before, during, and after a birth.
  • Nursing: Breast pumps, storage bags, and breastfeeding support.
  • Rewards and baby showers: Financial incentives, resources, education, and giveaways for keeping your baby healthy.

Additional Benefits to Support Your Family

  • Housing and Utility Support: Vouchers or assistance with housing or utility bills.
  • Fitness: Gym memberships and fitness essentials.
  • Grocery and Meal support: Grocery cards or allowances to purchase fresh foods or home-delivered meals.
  • Education: GED vouchers and school supplies.
  • Transportation: Rides and ride share gift cards to job interviews, wellness appointments, and more.

There are a lot of other benefits not listed, so please visit your plan’s website to check out the full list. Many rewards are provided as a prepaid card that you can use to purchase items like diapers or over-the-counter medications.

Every plan is a little different, and extra benefits offered may change over time. Additionally, some benefits may have eligibility requirements. Find your plan below and go directly to their website or contact the Member Services for additional details.

Meet Sarah’s Family: A Support Success Story

This is one example of how these extra benefits for Medicaid members may work in real life. Remember, all plans are a little different, so contact your plan to see what benefits you may be eligible to receive.

Sarah is expecting her second child and is a member of a Medicaid health plan. While standard Medicaid covers her medical exams, it doesn’t always cover the “hidden costs” of raising a healthy family, like high-quality car seats, strollers, cribs, healthy foods she needs for a healthy pregnancy, transportation to her prenatal appointments, and every day essentials such as diapers, wipes, and formula.

By using her extra benefits or services, Sarah learns she can:

  • Prepare for her baby. She received a reward card to purchase items like a car seat or a stroller, at no cost, ensuring her newborn was safe from day one.
  • Learn. She attended a regional “baby shower” and learned about other supports available through her health plan and got health coaching on how to stay healthy in pregnancy.
  • Stay healthy. She used grocery cards provided by her plan to buy fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Get extra support. Sarah connected with a doula for personalized birth support.
  • Save money. By attending her regular prenatal checkups, she received financial incentives, like a reward card or a credit, as a “thank you” from her health plan for taking proactive steps to stay healthy. She used the reward card to buy extra essentials.

Maternity and Infant Care Value-Added Benefits

For North Carolina Medicaid members, as of June 1, 2026.

What are value-added benefits?

Value-added benefits in Medicaid are extra, non-medical services offered by managed care organizations beyond the standard Medicaid benefits. They are designed to improve health outcomes and well-being.

Am I eligible to receive value-added benefits?

  • To access Standard Plan value-added benefits, you must be a Medicaid recipient and member of one of the following plans: AmeriHealth Caritas, Carolina Complete Health, Healthy Blue, or UnitedHealthcare Community Plan. If you are in a Tailored Plan or Medicaid Direct, you will have different benefits.
  • All Medicaid members have access to transportation support for healthcare needs.
  • Any Medicaid member can contact the Medicaid Member Ombudsman for free support in understanding their benefits.

How do I access the benefits?

Each plan offers slightly different benefits and ways of accessing them. Find your health plan in the table below to learn about the benefits they offer and how you can access them. When you call, you will need to have your Member ID ready.

What if I cannot access the benefits?

You have two choices if you can’t access your benefits. First, call the health plan directly (see the number in the table below). If that is not successful, you can contact the Medicaid Member Ombudsman at 877-201-3750.

Can someone request the benefits for me?

Most plans require the Medicaid member to request the benefits directly. However, you can work with your Care Manager, primary care provider, or other members of your healthcare team to help you.
