James Whiteside, MD, MA, MHA, is a surgeon, researcher, educator, and tenured professor of obstetrics and gynecology at East Carolina University’s Brody School of Medicine, where he also serves as chair of the department.

Prior to joining ECU, Dr. Whiteside was at the University of Cincinnati, where he served as division director of urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery, residency program director, and vice chair of education. He completed his undergraduate studies at The College of William and Mary in Virginia and earned a graduate degree in botany from the University of Georgia. Following medical school at the Medical College of Georgia, Dr. Whiteside completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Brown University/Women and Infants Hospital and a fellowship in urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio. He also holds a master’s degree in bioethics and health policy from Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois, and a master’s in health administration from the University of Cincinnati.

Nationally recognized for his research and commentary on topics ranging from anatomy to ethics, Dr. Whiteside has authored nearly 100 scientific articles, book chapters, and publications across diverse media. He is a grant reviewer for national and international research on pelvic floor dysfunction and an awarded reviewer for more than ten scientific journals, having also served on the editorial board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
